Pair of George IV Mahogany Hepplewhite Armchairs, Circa 1820 A superb pair of early 19th-century mahogany open armchairs in the late George III / early George IV Hepplewhite style, circa 1820. Each chair displays an elegant oval back with finely carved and moulded frames enclosing a pierced vase-shaped splat of interlaced design. The sweeping arms are beautifully shaped and terminate in scrolled handrests above traditionally upholstered seats, covered in dark blue horsehair fabric finished with brass stud edging. The chairs stand on square tapering front legs and slightly splayed rear supports, united by H-stretchers for stability. Exhibiting refined proportions, crisp carving, and rich patination, these chairs embody the restrained neoclassical elegance characteristic of Hepplewhite-inspired designs and early 19th-century English craftsmanship.
